Meet: Studio Kawa
Meet Ryan of Studio Kawa - A New England based design studio.
Ryan, how did you get into design? And even starting your own studio?
I graduated from the Shillington School of Design in 2016 and have been working in-house for CPG brands since, along with freelancing for outside clients in a variety of sectors. My partner, Ryosuke, is a formally trained painter and illustrator, and has developed his strong photography skills shooting stylized and ecommerce marketing materials for CPG brands.
What is your expertise in?
Concepting, design and content creation for brands – specifically CPG brands and restaurant/hospitality.
What makes you different from competitors/peers in your field?
As a two-person studio, we offer a wide range of skills and services, including long and short-form messaging and copyrighting.
How would you describe your style?
Organic, classical, playful, elegant, sometimes bordering on the psychedelic.
What trends are you seeing in your field right now (or to come)?
Everything is dependant on the brand, but I’m seeing a lot of beautiful creative that toys with gothic styles, especially in photography. Also – wild, bold typography and/or thin Swiss-style fonts. A lot more 3D design. Just to name a few.
What is a project you really enjoyed and what made it so enjoyable?
I was fortunate to design the identity for a new music supervision/licensing company. We were encouraged to play with and use custom illustrations. And, as a musician, it was a joy to work in this space, which I’ve not gotten enough of a chance to.
What fuels your creativity?
Beautiful figures and objects and ideas captured in modes that balance the classical with the avant-garde.
What defines a good from a great client for you?
A good client is clear with what they’re looking for throughout all stages of a project; a great client is a committed collaborator in achieving their desired outcomes.
What defines a terrible client for you?
A client that lacks a sense of purpose or perspective behind their brand or product. Also, one who ignores invoices.
Why do you like working with No Revisions?
My favorite aspect is that, as creatives, we’re free to develop an organic, ongoing relationship with the clients we work with.
